Sundor and Niru are friends. They live in a closed-off area of a strange and alien world, which they’re not meant to leave. Needless to say, they do; and, thus removed from their everyday environment, they discover the world. Not the world, of course, with which we readers are familiar, but their world, where the Empire of Gleaming Metal begins. This is a fantastic world with strange characters and odd eccentricities.
Sunor and Niru are explorers who not only wander round new lands, but are also passionate collectors: Sundor hunts light, while Niru focuses on sounds. The book concentrates more on Niru’s story, who sets off to look for his friend who’s disappeared in the course of an expedition gone wrong. From that point on, different encounters and adventures come thick and fast, in an almost picaresque way. The mood of the story is heavily influenced by Dávid Remsey’s illustrations, which not only serve to display certain elements, but also provide the background that supports and in a way, carries the text.
